I feel very strongly about how the US gov't has allowed the abuse of the middle class and migrant workers for their ultimate gain. It disgusts me that people are treated sub-human because they do not have visas. US policy allows for people to enter illegally and work, yet they are given no aid, no workman's comp... and when the employer wants to lay people off, they just call the INS and have them sweep up workers ( as far as what my ex-husband told me they do this a lot in LA ).
What: Concert at the Farm
When: Tuesday, Nov. 22nd , 8:30 p.m.
Where: 41st St. and Long Beach Ave.

For 13 years, 350 families have tended a 14-acre community farm in the middle of South L.A.'s gritty industrial belt. Growing their own cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes and other staples has helped make good nutrition affordable. Traditional crops like chipillin, alachi, quelite and pipicha have helped keep traditional cuisine and folk-medicine alive.

The City of L.A. acquired the land in the late 1980s, but abandoned plans to build a trash incinerator after community protests. In 1994, officials transferred title to the Harbor Department, which contracted with the L.A. Regional Food Bank to operate a community farm on the property. In 2003, the City Council agreed to sell the 14 acres back to the original owner, private developer Ralph Horowitz, who wants to demolish the garden and build a warehouse.

The 350 families - organized as South Central Farmers - have camped out in the field for weeks to prevent Horowitz from grabbing the land. A sneak attack can come at any time, though, and the group will hold a candlelight ceremony on Sunday to call public attention to their plight, as well as celebrate the traditional holiday, Day of the Dead.

Ozomatli began their career in the Los Angeles and San Diego/Mexico border-area club scene.

Zach De La Rocha:. is the former lead singer of Rage Against the Machine, a politically-inspired band founded in who were highly regarded as one of the most influential rock bands in recent history, having helped pave the way for many of today's hard rock bands that fuse rap and rock.

SON DE MADERA: Founded in 1992 and endowed with an enormous talent for musical arrangements and tradition research, Son de Madera represents the leading success in the current Son Jarocho movement.

LOS COJOLITES: Six years ago, the Center for Documentation and Research of the Son Jarocho, began their efforts to recover their history and culture in the refinery town of Cosoleacaque. A lot of workshops and classes were going on, and Los Cojolites project was one of them. It was made up of a group of kids that were getting together to learn how to dance and play the "son
jarocho."

QUETZAL: In 1993 Flores formed "Quetzal-A new experience in Chicano Music."
His idea was to push the boundaries of Chicano Music as we knew it. The centerpiece would be female vocals and the use of the violin as the lead
instrument. Proclaimed by no less an authority than Los Lobos as ready to carry the torch for Los Angeles's Chicano community, Quetzal embody the soul and the struggle at the heart of the Mexican-American legacy. Their mix of Mexican and Cuban rhythms, jazz, and rock is supercharged by the dynamic vocals of siblings Martha and Gabriel Gonzalez, who could send brown-eyed soul trifles straight to the top of the charts if they wanted to. Their music is informed by radical authors and grassroots tenacity.

"LA TIERRA ES DE QUIEN LA TRABAJA!
THE LAND IS OF THOSE THAT WORK IT!"
General Emiliano Zapata

And that is the notion of the digital divide. The simple fact that we are trying to discuss the issues of people that for the most part don’t own a computer let alone have reliable access to the Internet makes me feel a little skeptical about the conversations that will arise from such a forum. Part of me feels that trying to have this discussion is pointless since most of the people who are really affected by these issues will not be able to log in and give us the inside scoop. Yet, it is obvious that there is still a large number of us out there that feel the need for change even though we find ourselves higher in the economic ladder. So the question is, how important is the digital divide when it comes to the struggle of the working class of the world?

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez blamed President Bush on Sunday for Bolivia's crisis and said Bush's "poisoned medicine" of free-market democracy was being rejected by Latin America.
The left-wing Venezuelan leader said the protests that shook the Andean nation this week were triggered by popular opposition to capitalist free-trade policies advocated by Bush.

Chavez condemned as "poisoned medicine" a speech given by Bush to the Organization of American States last week in which he recommended a mix of representative democracy, integration of world markets and individual freedoms.

"That is what is killing the peoples of Latin America. ... This is the path of destabilization, of violence, of war between brothers," Chavez said, speaking on his "Hello President" weekly television and radio show.

The Venezuelan leader is a fierce critic of U.S. policies although his country, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, sells billions of dollars worth of oil to the United States each year.

Chavez rejected charges by some U.S. officials that he and Cuban President Fidel Castro were directing the Bolivian miners, rural peasants and labor groups who are demanding the nationalization of their country's rich gas resources.

"What's the cause? Is Fidel? Is it Chavez? No, Bush is the cause ... and what he represents," he said.

Addressing Bush in broken English and calling him "Mr. Danger," he added, "We, the people of Latin America are saying 'No Sir, Mr. Danger,' your poisoned medicine has failed."

Chavez welcomed signs the Bolivia protests were easing following the inauguration as president on Thursday of Eduardo Rodriguez. He replaced Carlos Mesa who resigned.

Chavez, a firebrand nationalist first elected in 1998, says free-market economic policies have increased not reduced poverty in Latin America. He proposes as an alternative his self-styled "revolution" in Venezuela, which channels oil income into health, education and job training for the poor.

He spoke while inaugurating one of 600 new medical treatment centers which his government was opening with help from Communist Cuba.

During his program lasting more than seven hours, Chavez received a phone call from Castro, which was broadcast live.

The two leaders mocked U.S. accusations that they had created an anti-U.S. alliance to destabilize Latin America and that it was being financed by Venezuela's oil income.

"You're the malevolent genius and I'm the rich financier of revolutions, what do you think?" Chavez told Castro.

"Well, it's marvelous," the Cuban leader replied.

Venezuela ships up to 90,000 barrels per day of oil to Cuba and more than 20,000 Cuban doctors, dentists, teachers and technicians, including sugar experts, are working in the South American oil exporter under a broad cooperation program.

The United States has criticized Chavez's close alliance with Castro, a longtime foe of Washington, and says it fears his rule in Venezuela is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
